Take the best ideas of six of the finest stock pickers in the business, and what do you get? A high-priced index fund.

Has anyone traded closed end bond funds? Apparently they currently are selling at a discount to net asset value because interest rates have been rising. It seems that they would be a good investment if interest rates have peaked. Are these funds better suited to an intermediate term trade than a long term investment??? What are some of the fine points about investing in them??

huskerdog, I like JAGTX too. What do you think of Janus Worldwide (JAWWX)? It's still international, but not as much into tech.

I am a new investor and in need of an user friendly software to calculate my capital gains & losses. I had tried MS Money and found it difficult to use. I could only found a shareware at http://hometown.aol.com/softwaydev/fsdg.html and wondering what other investors are using. Thanks

There is some very good, high level discussion of mutual fund selection (also some stock selection and market timing) at the Fasttrack forum on Investormap.com. It is at: http://www.investormap.com/forums

Here is some information about an interesting new kind of fund that MetaMarkets.com is starting.
From a Red Herring Article:
"The OpenFund is, indeed, completely open. On the fund's Web site, you can see, second by second, what actions the managers are making and why, and you can participate in discussion boards with fund shareholders and the fund managers. As thrill rides go, it's similar to online trading, but it's not nearly as scary for investors because there's an experienced fund manager listening in, making the final calls, and doing the real work.
It will be interesting to see what kind of investors want to play in a fund like this, and how Don manages his new dual role of mutual fund manager and Web community host."

Of course, the site (OpenFund.com) isn't working right now so I couldn't check out the page, but the idea sounds like a good one.

If you're looking for a high-flying mutual fund, have a high tolerance for risk (high for a mutual fund at least), and have a medium to mong-term outlook; then you should check out the Janus Global Technology fund. Just started Jan 1 of 1999, it is up 81% in about 8 and a half months. So far, so good. I have no vested interest, just a satisfied investor.

efalk,
if the fund is otherwise closed to new investors how are you going to get your first share?
Couldn't other "new investors" into the fund do it exactly the same way you plan to?

I like the RS (formerly Robertson Stephens) Growth Fund.
Also, I'm looking to buy a share of the Sequoia fund. (I'm told one can then increase the size of one's investment in this fund once you own one share. The fund is otherwise closed to new investors.)
