It was either American humorist Mark Twain or British politician Benjamin Disraeli who said there are three kinds of lies: Lies, damned lies and statistics. Considering that both gentlemen lived a century ago, it is amazing how applicable those words are today to the way industry analysts measure the success of e-commerce Web sites. HEre's something interesting I found. Don't know where it would be discussed, but apparently, British Telecom patented hyperlinking back in the late 80's. Yes, patented hyperlinking, which is so ubiquitous now. After more than a decade of allowing free use of the technology, BT has recently decided it wants to get paid and has been contacting major ISPs about liscencing.

Wow. Is the patent system just completely out of whack, or what. More importantly, is it fair for a company with a patent to allow the technology and the process to gain such mass acceptence and then require liscencing fees. I mean, what is an ISP supposed to do now? Take hyperlinks away? Can't be done. And, it is not like someone has been developing a competing technology--there's been no point. Well, here's a free hyperlink to the story: http://wired.com/news/politics/0,1283,37095,00.html
