The thing about AOL is, the company its going to be for the next ten years is not the same one it has been since you bought it. There is NO WAY it can grow as fast as it has.
I heard this morning on CNBC that it is actually selling with a negative spread vs. Time Warner right now based on the merger numbers.

techstockinvestor, because perception of a company actually does matter, do you still consider AOL to be a tech stock? Or maybe a media stock? Or some kind of as-of-yet-unseen combination? We had a similar discussion about this (I think on the AOL board), and just wondered what your thoughts are, especially given your first point of your last post.

We were e-mailed the following questions about AOL, and would like to post the questions and our answers here:

1) What do you see AOL's share price range for the next 2-4 months?
I think the only correct answer is "nobody knows." Tech stocks are extremely volatile short term. 2-4 months is too short term for me. To give you an idea about my investment time period, I like to wonder where my portfolio will be in 2010, ten years from now.

2) Do you believe that AOL's price will continue to drop (short term 2-4 months)?
AOL is down about 46% from its high (welcome to the volatile world of tech stocks) Its P/E ratio is still about 130 even after the decline, so yes it could go lower.

3) Do you have a "feel" for where the stock price may go as the year progresses and the merger with Time Warner takes place?
The street seems to be worried that the growth rate of the combined company will be less than the growth rate of AOL. Until management can convince the street that the combined company will have a high growth rate, it may continue to have problems.

4) Is now a good time to purchase AOL?
We own AOL and are down 46% from the high short term. But long term we are still up 2,513%. We are not buying or selling. We are holding. I wonder where the price will be in 2010?

"Tech Stock Insights from a Tech Stock Champ"

My favorite line from the article is: "We were up 183% last year, so I think to expect a repeat of that would be greedy."

GoTo.com(GOTO) just reported earnings after the close today. Revenue for the quarter was $13.3 million vs $580,000 a year ago. Should be interesting to see what the stock price does tomorrow.

We own GoTo.com and are currently up 313%

I needed a software that could calculate Wash Sales adjustments besides just capital gains and losses. I found a shareware at http://hometown.aol.com/softwaydev/fsdg.html and I wonder what other people are using. It would be a nightmare to do it manually if you have a lot of reacquired securities within the forbidden period. Did anyone ever got audited because of this ruling?

(1) GTMI (Global Telemedia International Inc.) Price as of 1/21 is $0.73. Global TeleMedia International Inc., through is subsidary BentleyTel.com, is leading the development of software for media, high speed, Internet and wireless communication systems, including international & long distance Voice over IP, LAN VPN (Virtual Private Network), ISP, Virtual ISP, and PC-PC, PC-Phone transmission of data and voice. GTMI has numerous valuable contracts already in effect and in the works. BentleyTel.com, has recently been selected as part of a consortium for a $110 million government contract for the Northern Territory of Australia. The consortium, leaded by Cable & Wireless Optus, includes BentleyTel.com who will supply all government voice, data and Internet facilities for the Northern Territory for five years, effective December 1, 1999. This is just one of the many contracts they have lined up, which shows the magnitude of this company's presence in the international telecom industry. They have also added highly respected management to direct this company through its very bright future. This gem is just being discovered and at a price like this, it is a steal. I look for this stock to continue to run as word quickly spreads about this unbelievable find. ***ONE MONTH PRICE TARGET*** $4.00-$6.00

Thanks for the articles.
My only comment on the Berkshire article is that I thought at first I was going to get to read about Berkshire Hathaway making technology picks. Now that would have been interesting. Its probably no mistake that this fund has a similar name.

From the Cheung article I was most impressed with how much importance he placed on a company's strategy. If a company's strategy changed (like the AtHome example) it was time to get out. Maybe that's why some people are getting out of AOL since the merger. They want to re-evaluate the company based on its new strategy and price.
