bobcobb, whereas it is true that much of China is still lacking many of the modern amenities and infrastructure we in the Western world take for granted, the truth of the matter is that alot of China is modernized, and the market is definitely there for computers. Just to mention a few possible markets - Internet coffee houses (springing up all over the place), Chinese business centers, universities, Hong Kong, the list is endless. The 'other appliances' you mentioned basically was true in the past - it was the story of the eighties (a trend that was of course halted briefly in the events of 89), and is really no longer an issue for many Chinese. It's great that Dell recognizes that China is more than ready to take the next step. I still think the most archaic technology in China are the old 1970s Russian planes that China uses for their airforce - and if that's as bad as it gets, then China is doing just fine. And again, it is very difficult for US businesses to get permission to do business in China directly, so if Dell can get in, watch out!

We agree, the market potential in China is huge! Over 1.2 billion people and they all want a personal computer.

Interesting article. I found this statement the most amusing.
<<Dell said sales in China were ``setting records'' for the company, but he did not give specific figures.>>
That could mean anything. It does sound like they are doing well in asia though.
Is it really true that all 1.2 billion people in china want a personal computer? Not to be too cynical, but they don't all even have electricity. Once they get that, there are alot of other appliances that would be much more useful and affordable. Of course, down the road 50 years you might be right, but by then will there even be PCs in the form we see them today?
One thing i definitely do agree with despite what i've written above is that this is a HUGE opportunity for Dell and other computer manufacturers and that it IS critical to their business.
