The CS First Boston / DLJ merger will have a significant effect on the IPO underwriting market. CSFB floated 39 IPOs this year, raising about $8.9 billion, and DLJ floated 20, raising $3.4 billion. The new company will be in a better position to rival IPO leader Goldman Sachs, which raised $23 billion through 41 IPOs. Five years ago, if somebody told you a networking company with no revenues and a secret product would go public and attain a $37 billion valuation within a week, you would have told them they were crazy. That's the case with Corvis, a recent IPO with a market cap almost as big as GM. (source: Red Herring) http://redherring.com/investor/2000/0810/inv-pc081000.html

It's interesting that the IPO market has the more offerings scheduled for this week than any other week in the past 6 years. My thoughts, these companies have been waiting in the wings over the past 2 months for any sign of positivity. They got it two weeks ago with that aborted rally. Now they are still trying to squeeze themselves out into the markets and get that influx of cash. The nice thing is, these offerings, on the whole, are strong. Even in the carnage that was last week, there were several successful IPOs.
