More than any two companies in the handheld space, Palm and arch-rival -- and close relative -- Handspring are showing us how the battle for supremacy is going to be fought in this growing market. Style will be a bigger selling point than substance, at least for the time being. (source: Upside) http://upside.com/Ebiz/399adbe50.html

Here is some analysis on Handspring. I am sort of torn--on the one hand, his argument that mobile phones will be able to do everything a PDA can do pretty soon makes me wary of the whole PDA marketplace. People are going to be ready to reduce their devices as soon as possible. But, I must say that leadership and vision are crucial for success and his praise for the management is compelling. If anyone is going to survive, it may as well be them.

The co-founders of Palm formed Handspring in 1998 compete with the PalmPilot handheld organizer. Handspring's Visor handheld is less expensive than Palm's low-end model, and accommodates such add-ons as a modem or extra memory. Handspring licenses Palm's operating system, which enables the Visor to run a multitude of programs created for the Palm. The company plans to go public soon and hopes to raise $300 million (source: SEC filing).
