I just tried it and I too was underwhelmed. The tool says 'browse by category', but there's no browsing. There's only a search tool. No default list, bestsellers, suggestions, etc. Just a search box, which apparently searches through a zero-record database - none of my searches returned anything. I hope this is a work-in-progress, because it's unusable as it stands.

I just checked out INSP's Active Shopper and my first impression is... very lame.
First, I typed in activeshopper.com, assuming that would take me to it. Nope, apparently they don't own that domain.
Second, the main page of ActiveShopper doesn't explain what the purpose of the service is, why I should use it, etc. Nor does it have a link to another page which answers these questions.
Third, I clicked on 'Software: Financial' just to test it out. I entered Quicken, the most popular financial software in the world. "Sorry, your search returned no results."
INSP's press release for ActiveShopper states that "it will define the standard for the next generation of shopping products". Boy, I hope not.

It will search through all the big e-commerce portals, auction sites, classified ads and non-web catalogs for any item you seek, along with reviews and promotions. InfoSpace will get a cut of every sale.

INSP is hot. They blew away analysts estimates (loss of 3 cents vs. consensus loss of 14 cents). Revenue grew 400% over the same quarter last year. And they're about to release their "active shopper" product. The story keeps getting better, and of course the stock price reflects it.

More good news:
InfoSpace.com expanded its reach last week with a deal to provide its directories to Microsoft. The directories will be available on Microsoft's 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0 Internet Explorer browser software versions, which are utilized by almost half of all internet users. Infospace already has an agreement with Netscape to provide its directories to Netscape's Navigator 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0 users.

InfoSpace.com said that ActiveShopper, its integrated private label e-commerce shopping solution, is ahead of schedule and will launch in May. The company said ActiveShopper is designed to be a comprehensive integrated e-commerce solution "that will define the standard for the next generation of shopping products." ActiveShopper will also enable InfoSpace.com's network of affiliates to become the merchant themselves and will allow them to bypass e-merchants by giving them an option to directly order from the wholesalers or manufacturers, the company said. "This is a giant leap from the current generation of product comparison products that are available today," Initial product categories are apparel, books and literature, communications, computer hardware, computer software, computer and video games, consumer electronics, flowers and cards, gifts and candy, home and garden, movies, video and DVDs, music, office supplies and equipment and toys and games. InfoSpace.com's affiliate network consists of more than 1,500 Web sites, including AOL, Netscape, Microsoft, Lycos, MetaCrawler, The Wall Street Journal Interactive Edition, ABC LocalNet and CBS's affiliated TV stations, among others.

Their lockup period ends on 6/13/99. There are currently 5 million shares available for trading, but on that date an additional 14 million will become available. If supply grows that much and demand doesn't change, there's a good chance that the stock price will fall significantly.

INSP rose 25% this week after announcing plans for a 2 for 1 stock split. This seems like an awfully big gain just because a split was announced. But I don't understand what makes net stocks move in general, so I'm not going to try to understand this one either...

Also, they're up to 11 million page views per day, and the number of affiliates (1500+) and advertisers continues to grow rapidly. All in all, a great business model.

INSP looks like a winner. Latest quarter's revenue was up 60% sequentially and 437% from the year-ago period. They beat earnings estimates and should achieve profitability in a year or so.
