Three major retailers - Wal-Mart, Kmart, and J.C. Penney - reported disappointing December sales Thursday, as a struggling economy and bad weather added up to a slower holiday shopping period. (source: CNNfn) http://cnnfn.cnn.com/2001/01/04/companies/store_sales/

Most of the biggest U.S. retailers, including such giants as Wal-Mart, Kmart and Sears, reported a gain in November sales Thursday. The sales numbers include the all-important Thanksgiving holiday weekend, which marks the official kickoff of the holiday shopping season and is traditionally one of the busiest shopping periods of the year. Spinway, the company that provides Internet access for Kmart's Bluelight.com, Costco, and Barnesandnoble.com, is in deep trouble, according to several partners. The company has already been blamed for dragging one company to its demise, and should it fail, more partners could suffer big losses. It was a bleak day for the retail sector. Although the Gap and Kmart met lowered expectations, the Gap warned on future earnings. Another retailer, Land's end, posted a surprise loss on the quarter and warned about future revenues. (source: CNNfn) http://cnnfn.cnn.com/2000/08/10/companies/retail_earnings/

KMart is just now getting around to opening a full-fledged online store, years after other e-tailers began extolling the supposedly unbeatable advantage of being a "first mover." (source: Upside)

I don't know Mach, but based on that 'stellar' earnings report from KMart, you may want to think about shopping somewhere else.

Wal-Mart's numbers, though, were a little stronger, but still, my recommendation is to stay far and away from retail.

I really think the big winners from the collapse of etailing will be companies like Walmart and KMart. In fact, I'm even thinking about investing in one or both, because of the opportunities that will open up for them both in the short and long term. What does everyone think?

Today's edition of what ever happened to... is about K-mart's Bluelight.com
The site still is in preview mode... and it sure looks like it was made by some kid for a high school web design project. I've heard that its selection is limited, and from what I noticed that seemed to be the case. I'm a big clicks and mortar fan, but they just don't seem to be going anywhere with it. Not that Wal-Mart is light years ahead or anything, but this site is no Bluelight.com special.

I checked out musicfavorites, and it looks pretty lame, at least for now. They just show you one CD for each category. There’s also a search tool, but that’s it. Hopefully someone who works on their site will eventually visit Amazon or CDnow to get an idea of how ecommerce works.

Kmart seems to be getting its act together, but Target and Wal-Mart are tough chains to compete with. I shop at Target and am amazed by how aggressive their pricing is.
