The latest price target that I've seen for LSI is $100. What are the prospect for the new focus on "communications" and continuation of "set top box" chips, etc.? Have we got enough new products in the pipeline to see that demand will not begin to waver at some point? LSI has really hung in there on the heels of PMCS, VTSS, and AMCS but hasn't been able to overcome their valuations. Is a day in the limelight to be on the horizon yet? |

LSI Logic recorded first quarter net income of $11 million, or 8 cents per diluted share, on revenue of $457 million. I think this one has been oversold and is ready for a rebound. The worst is over in the chip sector; the layoffs will help them cut costs; and 1999 should be a big year for Sony PlayStations, DVD players, and digital cameras, three consumer product markets that LSI is a leading chip producer in. |

It was criticizing LSI’s writing off of in-process R&D after the Symbios acquisition. In the tech biz this is a farily common practice (and in accordance with GAAP), so I wouldn’t worry too much about it. |

I read that Barron’s criticized LSI’s accounting practices in its latest quarterly report, but I didn’t get the details. Does anyone know what they said and whether it’s accurate? |
