For those of you who don't know about LVLT, it started as a division Peter Kiewit Sons' And if you you know anything about kiewit, you then know that level 3 will be a true success. Their fist venture with telecom, was MFS communication, which was sold, and is now the backbone of MCI WorldCom. Kiewit is one of the largest construction companies in the world, so that assures that the Level 3 network will be up and running faster than any business could ever try to defeat. Buy now, and ten years from now you will not regret it.

Level 3's business plan is to bury $14 billion in the ground, and it's well on its way, currently burning through $121 million a week. Upside takes an in-depth look at the company that hopes to be the next to make its name synonymous with its market (a la Intel and Microsoft). Check out the new Barron's issue: Level 3 is the subject of the cover story. In the article, David Barden, an analyst at J.P. Morgan who says that Level 3's stock should at least double over the next two to three years, says that once regulatory strictures are removed, broadband companies like Level 3 will be attractive takeover targets, especially Bell companies looking to offer high-speed Internet access and LD services.

Has anyone ever heard of MFS comm, or World Comm, MCI-WorldComm ? You must believe in LVLT-3 mgt and they will bring the same success to LVLT that they brought to MFA, etc.

Level 3 and Broadcast.com yesterday entered into a strategic pact that will give Broadcast.com broadband access at favorable pricing. The companies said in a statement that under the terms of the five-year strategic alliance, Broadcast.com (recently acquired by Yahoo) would use Level 3's international Internet Protocol network to deliver its audio and video content to customers at reduced fees. In addition, Level 3, an Internet communications company, will use Broadcast.com as its sole provider of Internet broadcasting. Broadcast.com will carry Level 3's annual meeting of stockholders today in Omaha. The broadcast is expected to be available today at www.Level3.com and www.broadcast.com. The companies also expect that they will "work together to develop future products in multicasting and other areas to enhance delivery of broadband video content and digital streaming services by both organizations and their customers," the statement said. "Together we will take Internet broadcasting to the next level, as we can deliver high-quality broadband content at increased bit rates to mass audiences," said Todd Wagner, Broadcast.com's chief executive.

smario, what part of that don't you understand?
A. Calculating price to sales ratio? It's total market cap for the company divided by annual revenues for the latest twelve months.
B. Why Level 3's would be so high? That's exactly my point. Investors are crazy about this company... or maybe they're just crazy.

Art, I'm going to assume you meant that you would not invest in this company. However, even though it's a 30billion company, you need to take in to account the type of technology the company is building itself upon (voice over IP) and the fact that they only started signing up customers 6 months ago. Personally, I think the fact they have a market cap of 30billion even though they are just a long distance company speaks volumes: it means that they must have a huge potential competitive advantage over the current competition.

Question, can anyone explain this excerpt from the same article? "Shares [of Level 3] go for a price-to-sales multiple of 73 -- compared with the average S&P 500 stock's price-to-sales multiple of 2. Even popular growth stocks such as Microsoft (MSFT) and Cisco Systems (CSCO) only have price-to-sales multiples of 23 and 18, respectively."

The first two paragraphs told me as much as I needed to know:
"The new long-distance telecommunications company signed up its first telephone customers only six months ago, faces construction costs of $8 billion to $10 billion and must compete with long-distance rivals that own tens of millions of customers and networks paid for long ago. Yet Level 3 sports a market capitalization of $29.9 billion -- about a third of AT&T and half of Sprint -- as its stock has soared 116% already this year. And most of its revenues come today from coal mining."
