Probably not important for Microsoft, but definitely important for Internet Gold, which is much smaller. A 75% jump seems like a lot, but I haven't investigated the stock thoroughly enough to make a call one way or the other. I would be interested in stats on how large of a demographic they're targeting here - that would probably be a useful guide in how important the alliance is.

how important is this alliance really?
I know the net is big in israel, but so many people speak english there already (at least of those who use the net nearly all of them do)
Of course, one can never discount the effect of a big name company like microsoft.

In brief - Microsoft announced a major web access and marketing agreement with Best Buy.
- A ruling by an European Union judge against Microsoft could reopen an anti-trust probe of its software in Europe. The news didn't seem to bother investors, who continued bidding up Microsoft shares.

belgarion,
You could do worse than to follow the companies you mention in your post. Also, keep one ear out always for deals that seem small or worthless right now (such as Amazon and Palm), but that are laying important partnerships and groundwork for exactly what you are referring to.

Also, related to what we are talking about:
"By next spring, European phone companies will be testing transmission systems to keep smart phones online constantly. The phone, like a corporate intranet terminal, will simply shuttle data all day and night, whenever it's on. This will force phone companies to come up with new ways to bill, while providing them with new advertising platforms. Charlotte Burke, vice president of marketing services and e-commerce for Bell Mobility, predicts wireless banking will be the next big thing. In surveying new wireless banking services from Canada's Bank of Montreal, Burke said that financial transactions ranked No. 2 behind e-mail as the most popular wireless data service. Once smart phones have GPS (global positioning satellite) chips in them, there will be no lack of location services. Just imagine the e-commerce potential. Merchants will be able not only to target consumers, but also to track them and entice them with offers as they walk or drive by. For example, a seafood restaurant that's having a slow night may choose to offer a 30% reduction on all its meals, a message sent automatically to any smart phone carrier who enters the restaurant's zip code."

belgarion,
those are a couple of big things holding back your idea... but as an idea, I love it. I'd sure use any product that could give me all that in one device, especially if it were available for one low price.

smario, that's exactly why I WOULD invest in the idea you are referring to right now rather than wait, because it's going to happen, and it will be cheaper to invest now. Can you imaging - Using your Palm Pilot like phone/terminal, complete with a MSFT like operating system, wireless broadband access, and call routing through Cisco/Qwest network technology? All your communications would be on one phone, including your local, Internet, LD, paging, mobile, operating system, broadband access, networking software, etc. for one low price a month, all with the best technology. Talk about true communications revolution. To me, the only thing holding the idea back right now is integration (partnerships and technology) and broadband wireless access. I think any companies focusing on solving these problems right now will be the jewels of the investing future, so get while you can. The problem is guessing which ones...any ideas???

Heads up on a huge Window 2000 bug. My roommate's computer at work had this problem (and quite a problem it was) - apparently, it's very possible by using the Word application that it can crash your hard drive and you will lose all of your data. He's pretty computer savvy, so it's not like he pressed "delete my hard drive" by accident; it is a bug. And when he tried to call MSFT to get service, they said the problem could be rectified, but only for hundreds of dollars. Way to stand by your products, guys.

Microsoft hasn't even chosen a name for its Windows 98 replacement yet, but the new OS is already well on its way to completion. CNET got a copy of a preview version, and describes what to expect when product hits the shelves late next year.

Until they offer unlimited cell phone access for a flat fee, Internet access on cell phones won't fly. The reason Internet use has exploded to date has been due to the unlimited hours plan. When i use my cell phone, i'm happy when I end my call just under the next minute (so I don't get charged extra). I couldn't imagine the number of minutes that I would rack up if I used the internet on my phone as well. It would be way too expensive - i'll just wait until I see a computer. I think it's a decent investment for the long term, but not for the here and now.
