Nortel stock actually went up on a day that they announced an acquisition (Sonoma Systems). Shocking! That breaks the seeming endless string of high-powered networking companies actually LOSING ground after announcing such deals. |

This is the problem I have with headlines in today's high-profile financial news reporting. Why use the word "failed"? All it does is imply to investors of both companys that the outcome was completely negative, and due to an inability of both sides to due what's best for shareholders. Saying something like "they mutually agreed to put off talks" or "they decided further talks would not benefit either company" would have been more accurate. Anyway, it goes along with my pet peeves in general with reporting like the kind of CNBC, where they take quotes out of context, or use quotes that 'supposedly' prove a point, but to any intellegint person, they don't provide any value whatsoever. I think that's enough rambling for Monday morning.

The lesson from the failed Corning-Nortel talks is this: The optical components industry is changing so rapidly, and it's worth so much to investors, that vertically integrated firms will soon become a thing of the past. And, as independent vendors spin off, they'll look to acquire more startups to satisfy their technology needs. (source: Red Herring) http://redherring.com/insider/2000/0731/tech-corning073100.html |

Lehman Brothers unveiled its list of 10 'uncommon value' stocks, and the list includes Nortel. Now I have no idea what is meant by uncommon value (what is common value?), but it's got to be good, right? |
