Here's an article from the Fool for all you Nortel followers. They are discussing it for possible inclusion in their Rule Maker portfolio (it didn't pass) - however it's a good rundown of the financial situation (solid).

Nortel Networks (NT) is taking the plunge into the application service provide (ASP) market in a big way: In two seperate announcements today, Nortel said it will buy software maker Epicon for $275 in stock, and it will work with BEA systems (BEAS) to integrate all the hosted ASP software packages. More news on the Nortel front, they will announce today at 9:30 that they will begin not only hosting software applications for companies internally (nothing new here), but this time integrate all different types of software to work together for the same company (here's the new part). It makes sense for Nortel, considering they have been looking to get into the hosting business (ie residuals) rather than just stay in the hardware side. They will work with BEA Systems to link the software together.

Mach, I noticed the same thing. But not to worry.

Anyway, here's a quote from the Barron's article that knocked Cisco: "If Cisco sold at the multiples of its competitors, investors would be shocked," the article said. "If the market valued $1 of Cisco's earnings the way it values $1 of Nortel's earnings, at a multiple of 100, Cisco stock would be selling for $35 per share. If it could command Lucent's multiple of 46, Cisco's share price would be around $16."

Now I don't view this as Bearish on Cisco, since the report really said nothing noone already knew, but completely bullish on Nortel. To me, this justifies an increas in Nortel's price not a decrease in Cisco, because I don't really think Cisco is too highly valued, and I DO think Nortel is ready to start moving again, especially once this split is out of the way.

Well, I had a mini-heart attack this weekend, as three major papers (NY, Philly, and Washington) all had Nortel dropping 52 points. Now I knew they were going to split real soon, but none of the papers mentioned a split, nor did they split adjust the highs and lows. But I finally tracked down this morning that Nortel is due to split today, and the papers must have all gotten the wrong half-data from the same source. So no, Nortel's operations did not all spontaneously combust after the close Friday.

Nortel is set to report April 25, and is expected to post a 33% increase in profits from the same quarter a year ago. Will these types of numbers help to right a VERY volatile market, or are these the types of numbers that will always be expected as the norm; ie only beating them will help the market?
