I don't want to start any rumors, cause this isn't a legit rumor, but I read somewhere today about the possibility for Nokia buying out Qualcomm. I think this would be more funny than anything else, mostly because I don't think Nokia particularly needs Qualcomm.

Another prediction I read - don't be surprised if Nokia is the largest company in the world by 2003. Move over Cisco, Microsoft, and GE.

Check out this comparison with Cisco, eveyone's favorite world dominator (and one of mine too!):
Sales:
Nokia - $5.9 billion for the quarter
Cisco - $4.4 billion

Growth Rates:
Nokia - 58%
Cisco - 52%.

Sure, there are other factors like gross margins (which Cisco does better on), but for Nokia to beat Cisco in these two areas says some great things about the future for the company.

Nokia announced a number of deals this morning, including an agreement with German Viag to supply radio access equipment and a deal to supply WAP gateway equipment to British Norweb Telecom. Nokia also announced an agreement to supply broadband Digital Subscriber Line systems to Dutch operator KPN Telecom and a wireless joint venture with Chinese software firm Shenyang Neu-Alpine Software.

Like other people on this board, I expect great things from this company to continue in the future, and don't be surprised if this stock starts to take a serious run.

Other investors seem to share your enthusiasm... NOK is up 8% today, close to an all-time high. I haven't researched the stock thoroughly enough to make a call one way or the other on it.

Nice buzz on the earnings report. Not only did their numbers blow past estimates, but their market share is growing, and aparently (from what I have heard) their profit margins are much better than the rest of the industry. Very impressive.

Just found this link for mobile and wireless fans: http://www.atvantage.com/public/static/wireless/mobile_wire.html

Some of it is fee-based, but the free stuff looks pretty good too.

Nokia blew past profit expectations for the quarter (up 71% from a year ago), and may raise estimates for the entire year, as it continues to lead the market. It reported eps of .19euros/share (don't know what the estimate was).

Here's their press release (pdf file):

Ericsson, Motorola and Nokia announced a joint initiative aimed at improving security for transactions over wireless networks. The world's top three mobile phone manufacturers teamed up on Tuesday in an attempt to secure the growth of e-commerce by developing an open, global industry framework for safer and simpler business over cellphones. Nokia, and tech in general today, is getting hid real hard (though slowly making a comeback) to the Motorola announcement that Motorola had component problems, competitive problems and supply problems. I can see some spillover from Motorola's problems to the rest of the industry, but it appears it is just one more buying opportunity for Nokia, which finally had the 4-1 split today.

Nokia held their annual meeting today, and basically approved everything on the slate, including the 4-1 split (effective April 10), a Euro .80/share dividend, and the board of directors.

from the current Upside:
"The market-share leader has lost just a touch of momentum as competitors have regained some ground. Nokia's superb manufacturing has ensured global availability of its popular handset models, but the company's infrastructure position could be in jeopardy if the one-stop-shop purchasing paradigm comes into force. We're still looking for Nokia's next-generation data phone, which is key to its continued leadership through 2000."

Look at how amazing these numbers are from their quarterly report (as compared with last year):

1. Net sales - 48% higher
2. Operating profit - 57% higher
3. Profit before tax and minority interests - 57% higher
4. Profit from continuing operations - 53% higher
5. Net profit - 47% higher
6. EPS from continuing operations, EUR, split adjusted - 51% higher
7. Proposed dividend - 67% higher

It's one thing to see these numbers with a startup. But this is an established industry leader we are talking about who increased sales by 6 billion! Amazing, and the future looks just as bright.

Good move Machiavelli. I've been an investor of Nokia for awhile now, and have been VERY happy with what's been going on over ther. I'm real excited about their new product coming out soon. No longer a "cell phone", the 7110 "handset" will incorporate features from both their cell phone line (voice) and the Palm Pilot personal toys (data). It's being dubbed as the "first true media phone," with such features as a large display, microbrowser, Navi(TM) roller, predictive text input, calendar, and phone book. Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) will be the source behind the phone. The only thing left to incorporate is wireless broadband, and once we get that, watch out!
