I'm pleased by their continued growth (120 new superstores opened in 1998) and their new quick-shop concept store (like a mini-OfficeMax) that they're experimenting with in some cities. Also, CopyMax and FurnitureMax seem to be working well, and their online sales are reportedly taking off (although they're not saying how fast).

I think the CEO has made some strategic errors: For example, he decided not to diversify into the commercial and mail order part of the office product business by acquisition. These are moves that both SPLS and ODP have made and both are benefitting significantly from it.

The stock is actually below book value at its current level. Seems to be a good value for bargain hunters.

OMX's ROE is lower than SPLS and ODP because OMX doesn't have the debt that these two do.

Does anyone know why OMX’s return on equity is so low (about half that of Staples and Office Depot)?
