Ellison said yesterday he's planning to triple his advertising budget to persuade everyone that Oracle is THE software company for e-business. Smart/stupid? |

That's good. Lane may be second in command, but he's really running the show, Ellison is just a figurehead. |

There have been rumors circulating that Oracle's #2 man (Ray Lane) would leave to become CEO of either HP or Compaq, but according to a representative at Oracle the rumors aren't true, Lane is staying. |

ORCL was down 2 today after Morgan Stanley Dean Witter cut its earnings forecast ahead of a company meeting with analysts. They cut their earnings estimate for the fiscal fourth quarter, ending this month, to 30 cents a share from 34 cents, and lowered their target price on Oracle shares to $30 from $39. |

How is the internet affecting Oracle? http://cgi.pathfinder.com/fortune/technology/1999/05/24/ora.html |

"10 out of the top 10 consumer web sites and 9 out of the top 10 business e-commerce sites are powered by Oracle databases." And the one exception is IBM's site, since IBM sells their own DBMS. ORCL is an internet company, although most investors don't realize it yet. |

ORCL is dropping in sympathy with SAP and PSFT as investors continue to flee the ERP space. But ORCL is a great company and they'll do fine long-term. I'm looking to accumulate on dips. |

Right you are, Carol, a pullback is healthy. ORCL has been riding the highs for quite some time, it looks like it will be riding the lows for a while now. An abundace of buying opportunities are in the works for this stock. |

The stock is still up about 150% from its October lows (even after last week's drop). Investors were getting "irrationally exuberant". A pullback is healthy. |

Yes, but applications license revenue grew only 5%, way below analyst expectations of 20%. Applications are the future of Oracle, since Oracle is a software company, not a services company, and since applications are where the margins are fattest and the business model is best. So I think the slowdown is serious, but we'll have to wait a few more quarters to see how serious. |

As one analyst said, the slowing professional services numbers can primarily be attributed to lower demand for ERP-related services as customers wrap up pre-Y2K deployments and postpone further work on these projects until next year. So this is a one-time event, not a sign that company's future outlook has gotten worse. I would look at continued weakness as a buying opportunity. |

Here's an article about the earnings report: http://www.ecommercetimes.com/news/articles/990312-2.shtml |

I think it's a little bit of an overreaction. The news wasn't that bad. Revenues still grew 19%, so it's not a dire situation. |

ORCL really got clobbered today. Down 23%. Earnings were in line with expectations, but revenues were too low. |

Oracle may be pushing hard, but Siebel is pushing harder and moving faster. If you doubt this, check out the Siebel message board on Investorville. Oracle may move into second place, but they won't ever unseat Siebel. |
