Oracle is a great database company, but they haven’t been able to replicate that success in other markets. They should’ve been able to leverage their database leadership into the applications market, but SAP, Peoplesoft etc. have eaten their lunch and even now Oracle continues to fall further behind in this booming area.

I have been expecting MSFT to catch ORCL for awhile now, and it does seem to be happening, although much more slowly than I expected. ORCL is a great company, maybe they can fight off MSFT the way Sun, Intuit and some others have.

newsman, Oracle isn't giving up without a fight. They just announced today that they're teaming up with Sun on some database software initiatives designed to fend off MS SQL Server. Here's the story: http://www7.mercurycenter.com/business/top/017063.htm

Microsoft ships SQL Server 7.0: http://www.techweb.com/wire/story/TWB19981210S0010 . This could be the version that puts MSFT ahead for good. Agree/disagree?

I’m growing increasingly nervous of MSFT SQL Server 7.0. Which of the following is the most likely scenario? A. ORCL remains ahead of MSFT forever and largely unaffected by them; B. ORCL remains ahead of MSFT forever but the gap continues to narrow and ORCL’s margins suffer as a result; or C. MSFT catches up to and passes ORCL, inflicting a great deal of pain in the process. Historically, for most of MSFT’s other competitors, it’s C.

11/11 Prudential rated ORCL a buy, saying they’re financially stable, well-positioned to benefit from a maturing client/server market, and a ‘safe choice’ vendor. They also pointed out that "in addition to Oracle's database technology, the company also has application and consulting services that allow them to provide a whole system solution. We would note that ORCL's database products have become a de facto standard at the higher end of the market and has been able to leverage this market presence toward their other product lines, all of which appear to be at the front end of strong product cycles."
