I had that same feeling about the high-flying IPO--it was good to see one. However, I believe this had more to do with the heat surrounding the infrastructure sector, and specifically the optical area. There was another lackluster IPO toady and I have a feeling that investors will continue to be skeptical and the companies cautious. All good in my mind, by the way... KG

I was just going to post this information...this could be really significant since it's been a while since we've had a high-flying ipo. I'm not sure if this first day pop is justified, but it is an infrastructure company (ie not a lack-of-business-plan-net-company), and it bodes well for the rest of the hardware industry. Hopefully it will show that companies CAN go public now, especially companies that can not only benefit themselves, but future shareholders (as opposed to some companies who really had no business going public so early). |

More signs that the IPO market is not completely dead: Shares of ONI Systems shares more than tripled after their public debut. This comes two weeks after New Focus, another optical networking firm, more than doubled in first-day trading, and a week after Sonus Networks did the same. http://msnbc.com/news/281551.asp Fiber-optics company ONI Systems (ONIS) priced at $25, opened at $80, closed at $82.56 and raised $200 million. |

Optical Networks makes fiber-optic equipment specifically designed for metropolitan and regional networks. Its Dynamic Transport System combines an optical network operating system, an inter-network communications protocol, and a transfer platform that features add-drop capabilities and modular dense wavelength division multiplexing, which increases the capacity of fiber networks. Customers include COLT Telecom and Williams Communications. Mohr, Davidow Ventures owns about 14% of Optical Networks, which plans to change its name to ONI Systems. It plans to raise $115 million and go public soon, although an official date has not yet been set. (source: SEC filing) |
