In brief:
- Priceline.com today said it has joined with a subsidiary of Japanese Internet investor Softbank to offer its service in Japan. Priceline and Softbank E-Commerce will each invest in Priceline.com Japan, which is expected to bring Priceline's "name your own price" services to Japan starting with airline tickets and hotel reservations.

Is profitability a possibility for Priceline? Yesterday's earnings report suggests it is close, but the stock dropped 20%. What's next? (source: Red Herring) http://redherring.com/investor/2000/0725/inv-priceline072500.html

Now, my big question with Priceline was, what is going to happen when the airlines themselves have a chance to compete. That was why that patent was so crucial. But, once the airlines start using this model themselves, they're in big trouble. Paul Allen is starting to liquidate as the stock approaches its 52-week lows. ominous.

Anyway, here was the negative info:
The Wall Street Journal reported that priceline's airline ticket business will face competition from an online venture backed by six major airlines. Hotwire.com will allow users to pick a discount fare for their travel route, which will be different from priceline's "name your own price" approach. However, travelers will not know the name of the airline they are choosing, the route or the time of day they will be traveling. Airlines included in the new site include UAL's United Airlines, AMR's American Airlines, Northwest Airlines, Continental Airlines US Airways and America West Holding's America West Airlines. All will have minority stakes in the site. Texas Pacific Group has a majority stake in the group. Also, Reuters was reporting that Paul Allen's Vulcan Ventures had filed with the Securities Exchange Commission to sell 1.62 million common shares of priceline.

All in all, not the greatest of days for a service I never use.

Flexibility has always paid off in regards to picking your "fly time". How long have "red-eye" flights been cheaper than others. PCLN isn't any more "constrictive" than the already existing market. Besides, whatever the consumer has to chalk up as a loss in "convenience" or otherwise (for their flights, hotel rooms, groceries, gas, and etc.) is much less than the comparative dollar amount that can be saved.

I assume you meant potential that is not even currently showing.
Here's the problem with their service, its still too restrictive, at least on the airline side of things.
I love that I can purchase surplus seating for a lower price but i'd only do it if I can choose when I fly...
Earnings are seeming to consistently beat estimates, but what does that mean anymore.

Priceline is offering a service that really has potential that it is even currently showing. Five to ten years down the road the rest of the "internet world" will have have PCLN to contend with in the largest manner possible. What better way to reach consumers over the internet than to offer the best deals available (anywhere) on a growing wide array of products.
