This is an old article, but if you are interested in investing in Pricline its a good one to read. http://www.businessweek.com/cgi-bin/ebiz/ebiz_frame.pl?url=/ebiz/9909/em0922.htm An article yesterday reported that Priceline easily surpassed its sales estimates for the fourth quarter and that its gross margin increased from 12.2% to 13.5%. |

I'd argue that their business model is business to consumer name your own price for large ticket items. The new service is neither for large ticket items nor business to consumer. The only thing that is the same is the mode of purchase... name your price. |

Actually JHirsch, I think it fits in perfectly with their business model. In both cases, a user names the price they are willing to pay, no? And the uncertainty exists in both cases - the original way, the uncertainty surrounds availability at the desired price, and in the new way, the uncertainty surrounds the resultant price for an available product. So the services complement each other quite well, depending on which uncertainty you are willing to tolerate! |

Interesting development for priceline. I'm not too suprised that they are getting into auctions, but I don't see how it really fits with their existing business model or clientele. Here's a quote from spokesman Brian Ek: "The reason for the January launch is that focus groups told us they’d likely be sitting with [holiday] gifts that they would just love to see go away if they could do it and get quick cash for it.” I don't think this factor will have a major impact. Is getting the cash rather than store credit worth as much hassle as the auction is going to be? This isn't like on ebay and yahoo where people are doing a huge volume and its worth the time. Thoughts anyone? Jake |

Priceline will offer person-to-person auctions under the name "Perfect YardSale". http://www.cnnfn.com/1999/12/27/companies/priceline/ |

What do people think about Priceline's new foray into consumer to consumer name your own price selling? its called perfect yardsale but it doesn't sound too perfect to me until they get a HUGE critical mass of users. bob |

this is slightly old news, but its still a pretty big development in the online travel wars. Priceline is partnering with Preview travel and travelocity. http://www.ecommercetimes.com/news/articles/991209-3.shtml |

Here is an article about the possible competitor I was talking about http://www.thestandard.com/article/display/0,1151,8029,00.html?01 The title of the article is a bit misleading because it isn't yet a one-stop shop. You can't make the actual reservation on this site just but as I said i'm sure someone will buy the software up or will offer its reservation service to partner. Jake |

Keep an eye on this one as a major competitor to Expedia, Priceline, and Travelocity... right now its only in beta and not affiliated with any major company. The site is www.itasoftware.com It was developed by MIT Artificial Intelligence researchers and is a "disruptive technology" according to reviewers. It allows for lots of things other sites don't such as a window of arrival and departure time. Keep an eye on whatever company snatches this software up. Jake |

The most recent post in the Priceline message board was made by smario on 11-17-99. "Well, it seems I was close in my guesses about the LD auctions. Though I still think this service will only 'serve' to keep dying long distance resellers in business a little more. The big boys won't need this business at all, and the fact is, noone who uses this service will request a block of time that would be MORE expensive than what they could get in a normal service. So the resulting prices will be lower than the lowest reseller, and the big boys wouldn't want to touch this with a ten foot pole." |

Priceline.com's Web site allows buyers to "name their own price" for airline tickets, hotel rooms, cars, and home mortgages, refinancing, and equity loans. It has licensed its technology to WebHouse Club, allowing buyers in New York to bid on grocery products. Jay Walker (founder and vice chairman) and Richard Braddock (chairman and CEO) own about 43% and 12% of the company, respectively. Earlier discussion about Priceline.com can be found in the Archives at http://www.investorville.com/ubb/Forum19/HTML/000016.html |
