AT&T, facing down a continuing slide in long-distance revenue that threatens chief Michael Armstrong's plans to recast the company as a broadband play, is slashing jobs at its consumer division. Four people close to the company say major layoffs are under way. A plan to cut as many as 7,000 jobs, or 30% of the consumer division's staff, could be announced as early as Tuesday when AT&T reports fourth-quarter earnings, these people say. AT&T officials confirm there are job cuts in progress, saying the company is cutting $2 billion from its overhead costs for the year. |

Yesterday, CEO C. Michael Armstrong reaffirmed the company's 1999 earnings estimates of between $2.15 and $2.20 a share, in line with the 25-analyst estimate of $2.19. The company said it expects to show 1999 pro forma revenue growth between 5% and 7%, and 2000 pro forma revenue growth between 8% and 9%, excluding the impact of Concert, its joint venture with British Telecom. |

From Jim Seymour, as the AOL/TimeWarner deal could affect AT&T: "The merger gives AOL a solid, inhouse brand of fast access to sell to its 20 million customers (i.e. the TWX-dominated RoadRunner service), thus making an AT&T-AOL deal to offer AOL as the preferred service on T's cable systems (am I putting this gently enough?) much less likely. AOL just doesn't need T's cable systems any more. But it would be nice to have that business, too, Steve Case must be thinking. My prediction: Despite the obvious competitive issues, look for talk of an AOL-T cable-modem-carriage deal to be resuscitated once this AOL-TWX deal has been digested. But that could be a year or more hence." |
