I think of AFFX as a biotech version of Applied Materials, i.e. they make the tools that enable biotech companies to do their stuff. This might seem less risky, but AFFX's fortunes will be inextricably linked to those of the entire biotech sector.

This stock seems like less of a risk than most biotech firms, because they're not trying to cure specific diseases (a long, arduous, and risky process), but instead are selling a very general process that allows other biotech firms to do the experimenting.

The story is even better than that. Each GeneChip gets them about $350K a year in revenues, but as they're used for more gene experiments, this number will rise, to $500K or so. So the number of units is rising fast, and the revenue per unit will also rise. What a great business model!

The stock might seem expensive, but this company is a winner. They began providing chip systems (called GeneChips) in 1996, and they now have 120 such systems in place, and they're placing about 2 new systems per week - that's almost 100% annual growth.

Basing the current price on a 50 P/E 2+ years down the road seems awfully aggressive to me.

Merrill Lynch initiated coverage of AFFX a couple weeks ago, with an intermediate term Accumulate and a long term Buy. Merrill says their price target is $35, based on expected EPS of $1.50 in 2001 times a P/E of 50.

I was happy to see that they have $80 million in cash. Biotech companies never seem to have enough money in the bank to survive long enough to reach profitability. I don't think this will be a big problem for AFFX.

Affymetrix is the leader, but there are a lot of competitors: Incyte, Nanogen, Hyseq, etc.

How’s the competitive landscape?

Affymetrix designs and produces gene chips, slivers of glass programmed to spot patterns in chromosome samples, to detect defects in genes, or to identify new disease genes that are potential targets for drugs.
