News: "Effective today, AltaVista and DoubleClick have decided to discontinue the Relevant Paid Links advertising program. After several months of evaluation and feedback, we believe, in general, this program does not meet the needs of the majority of our advertising partners." That cheer in the distance you hear is the collective voice of all people who believe that search engines should be based on relevancy rather than who pays the most. This world need at least one place where the rich don't always win by default. |

Well, it's official. CMGI will buy 83% of the Alta Vista search engine from Compaq for about $2.3 billion. |

CMG and Compaq just confirmed that they are in talks. Stay tuned... |

CMG owns 18% of Lycos, and it's been rumored that they're thinking about buying the remaining 82%. Assuming they could afford both, would it make sense to do both? There seems to be some overlap between Alta Vista and Lycos, so it might be a one-or-the-other type of thing. |

CMGI may be in talks to buy AltaVista for as much as $3 billion, according to CNBC reported, citing unidentified sources close to the companies. Dan Dorfman is the source of the rumor, so take it with a grain of salt. But the acquisition wouldn't surprise me at all, since CMG's stock is inflated and they know it. |

I think the Alta Vista opportunity is slipping away. Compaq has been spinning their wheels, acquiring junky net startups, and falling behind the leaders in traffic growth. This should've been the biggest IPO of the year, but with the IPO market weakening recently I wouldn't count on it. |

Alta Vista's Shopping.com is now offering refunds plus a gift certificate good for an additional 25% of the original purchase price to customers who are unsatisfied for any reason within 30 days of a purchase. Consumers can only use this 125% guarantee three times each year, and only for purchases up to $100. |

His new company is called doublebill.com. There's nothing at the site yet, and they're mum about revealing any details. |

AltaVista's Chief Technical Officer, Louis Monier, has left the company to pursue new opportunities. Monier has continued as the technical leader of the search engine. Monier has hooked up with venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and is excited about doing something new. Watch where this guy goes, it's bound to be a success. |

Yes, they're clearly marked as paid, and they also mention on their home page that they're now selling some links, so I don't think they're trying to deceive anyone. Try 'insurance' or 'cars' and you'll see how they look. |

I'd like to check it out, but the terms I tried don't show any paid links. What term should I try? Or are the paid links not make explicit on the page? |

Here's the press release about the paid links thing: http://www.altavista.com/av/content/pr041599.htm |

AltaVista has begun to auction off positioning at the top of search results for certain queries. For terms that have been purchased, their links appear as the first two in the results page. I wonder what prompted this (the troubles that Compaq has been having? Alta Vista not making enough money from its top-of-page ads?) |

After the IPO happens, it probably won't matter much. Before the IPO, it might, if Compaq doesn't have the $ to spend on marketing the site and continuing to improve the technology. I guess we'll just have to wait and see... |

Does anyone think Compaq's recent problems will affect Alta Vista's future (and its planned IPO)? |
