I guess the acquisition didn't pan out... on the plus side, they just reported traffic growth of 7% for August over July, moving them up from #17 to #15 on the highest-traffic sites. I don't know if their business model is viable, but the traffic growth is encouraging.

Both deals seem plausible: USA Networks is probably looking for a net portal to take the place of Lycos now that the merger was called off, and CBS has been cutting lots of deals for equity in exchange for TV advertising. I wouldn't be surprised if they were both interested and About.com was weighing its options.

According to Dan Dorfman, CBS and/or USA Networks may be considering acquiring About.com. Stay tuned...

They also bought about 3000 domain names starting with 'about' (e.g. aboutkids.com, etc).

Found this on their site: On May 17, 1999, MiningCo.com changed it's name to About.com. Why? Because even though our expert Guides still mine the Net for the best links, we've evolved to be so much more. We are about real people finding solutions and answers; we're about community; we are about original content; we are about e-commerce; we are about thousands of topics. We are About.com. Please visit us; you'll be glad you did.

I saw an ad for About.com on TV last night. If I didn't know what About.com was, I would've thought the ad was for a cult... "you weren't alone when you came into this world, so don't be alone when you go into the next one..." What's up with that?

Renaming the company and site is a smart move. Miningco.com always seemed clunky. Maybe they tried to buy mining.com but they weren't willing to pay enough to whoever owns it?

Mining Company is renaming itself to About.com. Any options on this company?
