Monday's acquisition of content Web site About by magazine publishing powerhouse Primedia provided a sobering lesson on the perils of playing net stocks as buyout targets, or even as long-term investments. It also sends a disquieting message about the near-term future of the sector, just when many are saying that the worst is past. What is certain is that only nimble traders ever had a shot at making money in About. (source: Forbes) http://www.forbes.com/2000/11/01/1101simons.html |

Investors seem pretty happy with About's numbers. The stock rose 41% after the announcement. Revenues of $13 million, up 500% from the same period a year ago and up 65% sequentially. The DLJ analyst who covers About is looking for 2000 revenues of $88.6 million, and set a $150 12-month price target on the stock. |

According to the latest numbers, About.com grew 26% in November over October, in terms of number of unique visitors (now about 11 million). A lot of e-commerce sites are reporting increased traffic as Christmas approaches, but I think About.com's growth is more remarkable because they're not an e-commerce site. |

The company is growing, but they still losing a LOT of money, and I'm skeptical about whether they'll ever be profitable. On the plus side, they've raised their advertising rates from $45 cpm to $51 cpm on average. On the minus side, they're only generating $15 per thousand page views, which tells me that they are only selling about a third of their available space. |

About.com's reach continues to grow. In August, About.com reached 14.1% of online households in August, up from 13.1% in July and 11.5% in June. Unique visitors increased to 8.9 million in August from 8.3 million in July. Media Metrix ranks About.com among the top 15 web properties, and ranks it #1 in news, information and entertainment sites. I wouldn't be surprised if About.com achieved a top 10 ranking by the end of the year. |

I love earnings season, especially when nothing seems to make any sense. Last week, About.com went up 3 after releasing third-quarter "earnings." Apparently, a third-quarter loss of $1.04 a share was "better" than a 4-analyst estimate of a $1.27 per-share loss. |

In theory they might have some new and intriguing ideas for this money, but a more likely explanation is that they need the cash to continue to operate at a loss and/or they want to increase their ad spending. The fact that it's an equity offering rather than a debt offering probably means that they feel the stock price is overvalued and/or they're not financially sound enough to get a low interest rate on their debt. Filings usually have some details on what the planned purpose is for the money, but they're often vague, so checking out the prospectus might not offer any clues. |

About.com was stumbling 3 1/8 yesterday, or 5.25, to 57 5/16 after it said it had filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission for a 3.5 million-share offering. Is this kind of move ever a good sign? To me, it signals a lack of cash to cover the current situation, but it also could potentially signal need for additional cash to cover new and intriguing plans and ideas. ??? |
