from the current Upside:
"Can Ask Jeeves grow into a CRM market leader? The answer to that query is uncertain. Few people recognize that Ask Jeeves has aspirations well beyond being a question-answering butler -- this servant wants to own the mansion. Another early Web CRM leader with a long road ahead, it's at least on the right track, with its recent acquisition of Net Effect and recognition of the need to provide both automated and live help for the next generation of Web customer service."

> does anyone know what ever became of that patent infringement lawsuit the MIT guys brought against AskJeeves?
The suit was filed on 12/16/99, so unless they settle out of court the matter probably won't be resolved for a long time.

I seem to be liking almost every move Askjeeves is making. Its really a lot like a personal butler who keeps you up to date on things and reminds you of things when you need them.

askjeeves is partnering with about.com and compaq. Compaq is partnering with the onilne customer service business and about.com with the search engine side. Both are big for askjeeves, but the about.com partnership might be bigger because of how quickly about.com's traffic is growing.

In brief - Two MIT professors filed a lawsuit against AskJeeves, saying they have a patent on natural-language search engine technology.

how can they afford the manpower to get all that information together? Its like compiling the largest library in the world 5 times over.
I asked it some simple questions... is it raining in seattle? - (an askjeeves favorite) and about 5 more. It didn't have answers for any of them or even answers to similar questions. For now it looks like a pretty bad site.
It might work well for a specific FAQ on a site but it wouldn't add much value in that case. Maybe as a filter for a customer service department of something. I'll still take my butler any day.
