Excite@Home announced that it will create a new portal aimed at businesses, called Work.com. Does anyone have a clue as to what the direction of this company is? Their management seems to be bouncing around from different idea to different idea, without any tying theme. |

I think it's a desperate act by a desperate company. AtHome was supposed to change the world, but cable modems haven't taken off the way they were supposed to. AtHome merged with Excite and then spent a billion dollars on a free greeting card site and continues to flail. Now they're acknowledging what most of us knew all along, that DSL is better than cable modems. They really seem to be flailing. The change of CEO may improve the situation, but I wouldn't hold my breath. |

I may have slightly misspoke - George Bell is now President and CEO, and Jermoluk is Chairman. So he just stepped aside. But more importantly, AtHome is trying to become a full broadband company by looking into offering DSL service to complement the cable service. Apparently they did want to bet their entire future on the acceptance and limitations of cable access. But AtHome said they will honor current contracts with cable providers that won't allow DSL into their markets. I think this is a really good move, and we will see if they move into wireless as well. |

I just heard that Jermoluk is stepping down at Excite@Home. This is pretty big news, as he is handing over the reings to current President George Bell. But I can't help but wonder why he stepped down one day after this company posts their first quarter profit ever. Maybe he's finally realizing that the future will not consist of cable modems and cable Internet access. It will be interesting to read his actual reasons and where he will end up. Maybe a DSL competitor perhaps? ![]() |

I also like the idea of that product, smario, and think they should move forward with it. The big news yesterday was that they plan to issue a tracking stock (there is speculation that AT&T will as well for their cell business) for its media assets, a move intended to eliminate confusion and help the company move faster in the hectic Internet world. The common stock, which will be distributed to all shareholders on a tax-free basis, will track the economic performance of the media business. Supposedly, this will be a way for the AtHome to truly gauge whether or not they can take advantage of their 'Internet company' side of the business (rather than the ISP/telecom side), and use the money for more acquisitions. Question: do they only count shareholders as of the announcement, or if I buy shares today, do I get tracking stock shares as well? |

The most recent post in the At Home message board was made by smario on 11-19-99. "I was wondering why AtHome's stock responded so favorably to yesterday's FCC ruling (opening up the Baby bell's Internet lines to competition - helps DSL specifically, not cable), but it seems that it is a ruling that simply helps the high-speed access industry in general. Plus, Excite@Home considering using wireless transmission boxes, which will result in decreased installation costs and give the customer high-speed Internet access regardless of where in the home the cable connection is located. They can also be bought in stores (ie no more "i'll be there between 9 and 5"). To me this is really a useful and brilliant product. They should do more than just 'consider' it." |
