After the bell yesterday, Qualcomm reported net income, excluding one-time charges, of $135 million, or 75 cents per share, compared with $24.7 million, or 17 cents a share, during the year-ago period. Analysts surveyed by First Call expected the company to report a 63-cent profit for the quarter. "We achieved several important milestones this quarter," said Dr. Irwin Mark Jacobs, chairman and CEO of Qualcomm. The company won the No. 2 position in digital phone market share in the U.S., according to Dataquest and shipped over 11 million MSM chips to CDMA phone manufacturers worldwide. |

Found this on a news site: "Shares of Qualcomm and other telecommunications equipment makers, among the highest-flying U.S. stocks in recent quarters, fell as investors looked for less expensive shares that may have more room to rise. Optimism for stronger-than-expected U.S. economic growth is prompting investors to look for gains in cyclical stocks that trade at a discount to the phone-equipment makers and other fast-growing companies." They're basically saying that QCOM has done so well (the second best performer in the Nasdaq 100 this year) that occasional 10% drops are to be expected. I don't think the dip signifies any change in the outlook for the company. |

Can anyone shed some light on the recent price drop of Qualcomm stock? |

The coming introductions of Motorola and Nokia handsets are a very real threat that could apply considerable margin pressure to QCOM. |

Qualcomm is still a leader in CDMA chip sets and cell phones, but there is significant competitive pressure that will keep prices down. Also, DSOs are up to 117, the highest ever and much higher than they should be. |

Latest report (from 1/20): revenues of $941M, up 20% from the same quarter last year. EPS were 58 cents (excluding a one-time gain), same as last year. |

Strangly, H&Q left FY99 EPS estimates unchanged at $2.60. I guess their point is the future isn't necessary worse than previously thought, just more uncertain. |

Here's why H&Q downgraded: the earnings surprise was driven primarily by one-time non-operational gains (due to the sale of an asset) and lower taxes. revenues were slightly below expectations. increasing competition from CDMA cell phones profitability concerns about infrastructure sales DSO went from 65 days to 88 days |

Qualcomm's earnings were well above the expected numbers from analysts, but yesterday the stock was downgraded by Hambrecht & Quist to a hold and the price has been declining since the announcement. What am I missing to explain these two happenings? |

How will the Brazilian currency problems affect Qualcomm's earnings, if at all? |
