Another blowout quarter. 20 cents vs. 14 expected and 10 in the year ago quarter. All I can say is wow.

I think they report on 4/20.

Does anyone know the exact date SEBL will report? I thought it was next week but I just read an article that says it's tomorrow. Could that be right?

I'm a huge SEBL bull. CRM is going to be bigger than ERP, ergo SEBL is going to be bigger than SAP. Buy it now, thank me later.

All the tech stocks were down on Friday, so that was part of it, and SEBL was hit harder because it's gained a lot recently and was due for a pullback. The other thing was that Larry Ellison said that Oracle is now the #2 player in customer relationship management, and that it's catching up to SEBL. Ellison has been saying things like this for years, but as others on this message have pointed out, he's all talk and no action. If Ellison would pay more attention to his company and less to the media, maybe revenue growth wouldn't be stalled and analysts wouldn't be downgrading his company en masse like they did this week.

Does anyone know why SEBL was down $4 today?

Yes. SAP isn't an immediate threat (they've been promising products for 4 years; also, lots of SAP customers also use SEBL); ORCL has been spending money to create interest in SFA and then the interested companies become SEBL customers; SEBL management doesn't know of any emerging web-only competitors who are real threats. The outlook is better than ever.

Bill, did they say anything about competition looming?

I listened to their latest conference call. Here's what I took from it:
- They're very optimistic, things look stronger than ever: products, brands, partners, market share, etc. All regions are doing well, esp. Europe, pushing hard there. These tools are becoming a necessity, we're just getting started. SEBL is distancing itself from the competition. This is a market share game, and they're winning.
- Growth remains excellent. Operating margins were 24% in the quarter, but management says to expect 20% in the future. Deferred revenue total is now $51 million. DSO are down to 90 days.
- Siebel 99 is exceptional, a complete solution, a revolutionary product, completely web-based, configure it once, deploy it anywhere. 600 person-years of work, a substantial barrier to entry for competitors. Can be implemented in HTML, Java, or ActiveX.
- Scopus integration, both people and code, is complete in Siebel 99. Nearly all Scopus customers will upgrade to Siebel 99. they have an upgrade tool that does this automatically (Scopus to Siebel 99 or Siebel 98 to 99)

The No. 2 man at giant enterprise vendor SAP's America division, Jeremy Coote, is resigning to work for competitor Siebel Systems, the company announced Wednesday. Coote, who had been the president of SAP America since 1996, will become Siebel's vice president of North American operations, officials said. "It's unfortunate -- we're disappointed," SAP America CEO Kevin McKay said Wednesday. "Coote was a very successful executive who helped to shape the company."

You thought that was bold - At last week's conference he said about their new site "We believe sales.com will be the largest website in history." A slight exaggeration, perhaps. But who else would you want running this company?

Tom Siebel is serious. Who else would have the nerve to use a slogan like "Siebel Everywhere"? And I think he can pull it off.

Siebel Systems has revealed plans to offer its basic sales-force automation application free to single users, and create a new web portal of useful information, in hopes of extending its reach from giant enterprises to individual sales representatives. http://www.infoworld.com/cgi-bin/displayStory.pl?990224.wesiebel.htm

eagle, I wouldn't worry. Ellison has been saying this for years, and SEBL has blown right by ORCL. ORCL should've been able to leverage their database leadership into the applications space, but they've lagged behind. Ellison is talk, Siebel is action.

Some interesting comments- 'Siebel Systems (SEBL) is "doomed" because of a huge number of unhappy customers, the characteristically brash Oracle Chief Executive Larry Ellison said Monday in a press briefing following his luncheon address to money managers. Look for Oracle to poach several "marquee names" from Siebel in the coming months, Ellison added.
Representatives for San Mateo, Calif.-based Siebel weren't immediately available for comment. Incidentally, the namesake of Siebel -- the hard-driving Tom Siebel -- once worked for Ellison at Oracle.'
