from the current Upside:
"The leading U.S. GSM consolidation firm (along with investors Hutchison and Sonera), VoiceStream is a superbly managed company. But it still faces challenges in completing a nationwide GSM footprint, and it needs to adopt a stronger leadership position on data. Both of these initiatives will require a significant capital infusion and potentially a strategic investor or acquisition."

Man, this company is just continuing it's upward movement, now around 105. I still think this is a great investment for anyone looking at wireless companies.

hankhawk - maybe this will help you out. PaineWebber raised its price target on VoiceStream to 120 from 80.

hankhawk, i'm interested in hearing how you decided to get in so early on this stock. I usually consider myself telecom savvy, but I had actually not heard of this company until recently...somehow I had missed it. What made you decide to pull the trigger?

And dude, as is the case with any new telecom company, early losses are usually a good sign when couple with great growth - it means they are building up their infrastructure (and those beginning fixed costs are usually astronomical). Once the network is completed, they can just sit back and watch those losses turn into gains (in theory).

Here's the earnings announcement from yesterday: http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/991025/wa_voicest_2.html

They're growing fast (about 200% a year), but they're losing a lot of money (revenues for the quarter were $110 million and losses were $93 million). My investment strategy doesn't allow me to buy a stock that's losing this much money, but as a speculative play it might be worth a closer look.

Does anyone think VSTR will reach 100? Will they split, be bought out, etc. I know I'm asking for speculation, but this stock has skyrocketed so fast since I bought it, I'd like to hear other's ideas about it.

smario, thanks for the heads up on this company. I had never heard of them before, but it's great to finally see a company successfully embracing the GSM standard in this country. I really believe any wireless company is shooting themselves in the foot (though it's possible they can't get the frequency licenses) by not doing so. I have no idea if the stock is overvalued or not, but i'm going to be watching them from now on (and how about a number to call for one of their rate plans??)

smario,
You mentioned that VSTR has a market cap twice that of the company it was spun off from. Do you know whether the parent company still holds a signifant amount of stock in VSTR? If so, it could be a 'legal arbitrage opportunity'...

I like this company primarily because they have embraced the GSM standard in this country (the main standard in the rest of the world!). They have been extremely active on the mergers and acquisitions front, using its strong stock as currency to purchase other regional cellular companies. On June 23, VoiceStream announced that it was acquiring Omnipoint, a GSM wireless service provider with a major presence in the Northeast, and on September 20 they announced that it was purchasing Aerial Communications, another GSM provider, this time in the MidWest, in a $2 billion stock-swap transaction valued just shy of $2 billion. When VoiceStream's mergers with Omnipoint and Aerial are completed, VoiceStream will have over 1.5 million subscribers and, more importantly, will be close to having a nationwide wireless network. When the deals close, VoiceStream will have cellular licenses in 22 of the country's 25 largest cities. The most notable holes are in the Southeast, where the combined VoiceStream will only have a limited presence. However, the most prominent regional firm in the Southeast, Powertel, will probably get eaten up by VoiceStream to fill the hole.

VoiceStream Wireless is one of the nation's up and coming wireless phone companies. The firm has approximately 450,000 subscribers in major cities across the western U.S. The company's network currently operates on the GSM cellular standard, the digital cellular technology most commonly used around the world today. Spun off from Western Wireless in May, VoiceStream's stock has gone from an opening price of $21 all the way to a new high of $78.50 last week. VoiceStream's market capitalization is now roughly double that of its old parent company.
