Talk about missing the boat! Though much of Wall Street seemed to have been caught off-guard by Monday’s announced merger of German government-owned Deutsche Telekom AG and Bellevue, Wash.-based VoiceStream Wireless , the folks who look to have been caught in the deepest snooze of all were a group widely regarded as among the savviest in all of investing: Wall Street’s legendary deal-arbitrageurs. (source: MSNBC) http://www.msnbc.com/news/437031.asp This author believes that any opposition to the Deutsche Telekom-Voicestream merger is ridiculous. Sprint's William T. Esrey, the chief executive, insists his company doesn’t need to merge with a big company to be successful in the new world of telecommunications giants, and he says he isn’t talking to any potential buyers. (source: MSNBC) http://www.msnbc.com/news/432796.asp Are megamergers the way to succeed in business? Report today that DT has made an offer for Voicestream. This move to me was unexpected - I thought DT would make a push for Sprint not Voicestream. Apparently, they still may make a push for Sprint since they still need an LD foothold in this country. But if they do, then why by Voicestream? If you buy Sprint, you don't need Voicestream's mobile business? Though if they then buy Worldcom, everything may integrate quite nicely... |
