In the middle of a strike, Verizon, the phone company formed by the merger of Bell Atlantic and GTE, said Tuesday that adjusted net income rose 5.1% in the second quarter, but that fell well short of Wall Street expectations. Verizon also inked a deal to obtain a controlling stake in broadband suppler NorthPoint Communications.
