SkyTel's stock rose in April when a BusinessWeek column mentioned the possibility of an MCI WorldCom buyout. SkyTel earlier this month confirmed it had hired investment banker Warburg Dillon Read "to assist the company in evaluating its strategic alternatives", but both SkyTel and MCI Worldcom refused to comment on the rumor. |

Well the news certainly helped out Skytel's stock yesterday. It rose over 10%. It is true though, by doing something as simple as registering a domain name, it means the same as if the company screamed to the world over a really big loudspeaker about a future business move. |

MCI WorldCom recently registered the skytelworldcom.com web domain address with Network Solutions. Acquisition perhaps? |

Actually MCI Worldcom's CEO said at this week's shareholder meeting that he's not planning to push too hard in wireless. Maybe he learned something during the failed Nextel deal that we don't know. |

MCI WorldCom, which wants to break into the wireless phone business, has had merger talks with Australian carrier AAPT Ltd, a source close to MCI said today. AAPT, which is the subject of a A$1.5 billion hostile bid from Cable & Wireless Optus Ltd, will shortly start the installation of a broadband wireless network using local multipoint distribution services (LMDS) technology. MCI WorldCom's Australian unit, which is building a fiber optic network, is interested in expanding its customer base and considers AAPT could be the vehicle to achieve this strategy. |

According to the article, "The two companies talked for several weeks about a possible deal, but could not agree on the final price MCI WorldCom would pay to Nextel's shareholders. MCI WorldCom wanted to pay about $42.50 a share, or $12.4 billion, but Nextel wanted more than $44 a share, or about $12.8 billion, sources said." There must have been something else...Would Worldcom, which needs a wireless network (and subscriber base), really have balked over a difference of $400million? I know Worldcom works on the cheap, but come on, this still seems like chump change for a giant like Worldcom. |

Well there you go, MCI/WDCM officially broke off talks with Nextel. What are they going to do now, perhaps listen to me? Probably not. |

I think MCI/Wldcm has a real opportunity to change the face of communications. Rather than buy Nextel (and thus enter the battle to the death of competing cell providers and frequencies), why don't they decide to invest alot more money into developing a GSM compatible system (or equivalent of) here in the US? Not only would that make their US cell phones capable of world-wide roaming, Phones from outside the US would finally work here. This system in Europe is currently the best in the world; you can roam from country to country with no extra charge...but it doesn't work here. I gotta believe if MCI/Wldm built this, people would come. Since they don't have a cell-phone business currently, they really have the opportunity to go this way, as opposed to the other behemoths. As great as Worldcom stock is currently, if they moved in this new direction, I might throw all my money their way. Nextel doesn't interest me...I hate their phones anyway. |

Also, management said the MCI integration was going smoothly. That's good to hear, because mergers of equals usually run into problems. |

The latest quarter was very good. Earnings and revenues both a little above expectations. Data revenues were up 29% to $1.6B, internet revenues were up 61% to $660M, and international revenues were up 56% to $330M. |
