BRK is about to finish its first down year since 1990 (it's down about 23% so far this year). Any opinions on whether this might be a buying opportunity?

Paine Webber began covering Berkshire and decided on an 'attractive' rating on 1/21/99.

Wow, that’s 31 companies. Buffett always said investors should only hold 6 to 10 stocks, the ones they are most confident in. I guess BRK is getting so big that he has more money than he knows what to do with.

Buffett has consistently bought large caps. Is that because he has so much money to manage that he has no choice, or that he things this is where the best investments are? I’ve heard a lot of people saying small caps are where the bargains are now, which theoretically means that we have an advantage over Buffett

According to a report at Bloomberg: "The London Times reported, citing unnamed "insiders" (i.e. triple hearsay, so handle with care) that Buffett may wait for LTCM to stabilize before making an offer to take over 90% stake from the 14 banks that originally bailed out the fund for $3.6 billion. LTCM is currently worth $3.8 billion, the paper reported."

Trader Joe - I haven’t heard that one, but I heard on CNBC that Buffett might be considering a buyout of hedge fund Long Term Capital Management.

Buffettology, has anyone read it? I read it and have gone through the chapters and noted the methods used for valuation of investments. I seem to get various answers to the valuation question depending on which chapter I refer to. Has anyone else notice the inconsistency? I'd like to find someone who read it and would like to discuss the different methods.

I heard a rumor that BRK might be buying Merrill Lynch. Of course, due to lax reporting requirements we won’t know for sure for 12 months, but has anyone heard anything about it? Does it seem like the type of investment Buffett would make?
