Integrated communications provider Birch Telecom offers local and long-distance phone service, Internet access, and data services to more than 20,000 small and midsized businesses. The company also serves residential customers in Kansas, Missouri, and Texas. Founded in 1997 by CEO Dave Scott and SVP Jeff Shackelford, Birch has its own packet switches and leases network capacity from its competitor to serve more than 135,000 access lines. The firm got a jumpstart with the 1998 acquisition of Valu-Line, a Kansas-based long-distance provider; it subsequently made five more purchases to fuel its growth. The company plans to go public soon and hopes to raise $230 million (source: SEC filing).
