In relation to the article... once after hours trading was established, the first day saw 142 trades completed, and over 1000 unfilled orders. Until more people start using the service people will be frustrated, and until it becomes less frustrating there will probably be this miniscule volume of trades. Its a bit of a vicious circle, although some heavy marketing by some of the brokerages could probably increase the volume a bit. I only worry that the large spreads will keep people who know what they are doing scared away. If people who don't know what they are doing are the ones who are trading after hours then we've got another problem alltogether.

Nasdaq's plans for a few extra hours in the evening is nice, but it might not be that important. ECNs like Archipelago (partially owned by E*Trade) and Datek's Island will allow 24/7 trading as soon as there's significant demand for it.

Second quarter of 2000 (at least that's what they're planning).

When is the NYSE decimalization supposed to take place?

I just read the article, and it's important to keep in mind that only the NYSE has said it will definitely delay extended trading hours for the reasons Trader Joe highlighted. Nasdaq said they would like to do the same, but if the alternate trading systems go ahead now with plans to offer after hours trading to clients, so will Nasdaq; they will not wait until Y2K is over and done with.

They're delaying extended trading hours to focus on Y2K issues and decimalization (i.e. using cents instead of fractions). As anxious as I am for extended trading hours, I agree that these two things are higher priority.

The New York Stock Exchange said it would delay extension of its trading hours until at least the second half of next year. The
decision comes just a week after the Nasdaq announced plans for an evening session starting as soon as September.
