Good call Art,
I see margins being even worse this year than last year because of all the free stuff and free shipping that these sites are giving away.
For fun, next time you are watching TV count the e-commerce ads and count the non e-commerce related ads during a full show. I'd bet more than half will be for e-commerce companies.
On that note, last night i saw the new Amazon.com commercial with the 50's looking guys singing amazon carols, then a BN.com ad, then the Amazon.com ad directly after it. That was the whole commercial break...
happy shopping everyone : )

I've been hearing the 'pundits' forecasting online holiday sales of about twice what they were last year. My emailbox is stuffed with $10 off coupons from just about every major e-commerce site. Given that internet traffic has more than doubled in the last year, and given how aggressively etailers are being with their discounts, I would expect 150-175% sales growth over last year, not 100%.

That article is certainly encouraging, but I also recently read a study that 75% of all e-business startups will fail. The study was completed a month ago by the Gartner Group, an IT consulting firm. That number bodes well for the big players which will probably buy many of the smaller ones up some time in the next year or so and for clicks and mortar companies.

Online retailers breathed a sigh of relief after posting record online sales around the Thanksgiving shopping surge without causing their sites to crash.

eWanted reverses the traditional auction system: here, you say what you're looking for, and people who have that item tell you how much they want for it.

What else does Denmans have going for it?

(quote from Denmans.com prez.)
"As the only online jeweler with a location in the L.A. jewelry district, we are establishing relationships with some of the most sought after designers, manufacturers and dealers. With our direct link to a huge source of jewelry product, we can provide exquisite selection to our discerning customers at much lower prices."

Ain't it beautiful. No wholesaler mark ups, ergo low prices are possible. Endless selection without the inventory. Shipping directly from source through a courrier. Does that sound like a plan of success to you?

I don't know how they compete with Demans but i have seen TV ads for BlueNile.com (which sells diamonds) and I also know there is a company called NetJewels.com which sells all kinds of Jewelry. It is going to IPO sometime in the next few months I believe. I always am a bit wary of a company that says it will have the lowest price, best service, best selection, and the best quality at the same time. There are such companies but they are rare...
not trying to rain on your parade, but just to let you know its not easy to become the Amazon.com of Jewelry.
What else do you know about demans that makes you think they'll be able to do this?

As the net grows and Interent commerce becomes commonplace, companies who are able to realize potential opportunities of its growth will be in a position to dominate.

"...There is no apparent established online jewelry industry leader that is comparable in market dominance to an Amazon.com in its respective market segments. Our site launch is but the beginning of a proven method that we intend on using to achieve our goal as the online jewelry market leader."

...customers will be rewarded with unprecedented pricing as never seen before in the online jewelry industry. With compelling content, advantage pricing, a commitment to customer satisfaction and a guarantee of quality, net shoppers can trust denmans.com to deliver the most extensive selection of the highest quality authentic jewelry. http://www.dmsz.com http://www.denmans.com
