The Nasdaq erased two days of gains Thursday, plunging more than 130 points after downgrades in the semiconductor sector sparked a hefty sell-off in the tech sector as concerns about profit growth drove investors to the sidelines. By the day's end, the Nasdaq had tumbled 133.61 points, or more than 4 percent, to 3,031.88, while the Dow slid 51.57 points to 10,656.03. This columnist believes that the wealth effect that has powered much of the economy's growth over the past several years has been put into reverse as paper wealth begins to deteriorate. If so, economic growth and corporate profits are going to feel the effects. (source: MarketWatch) http://www.marketwatch.com/archive/20001114/news/current/erdman.htx |

Things were pretty rosy before the Fed announced that it would leave rates unchanged but that it was maintaining its bias against inflation. After the announcement the major indices slipped into the red for the first time since early this morning. However, there was a minor recovery in the final hour as buyers stepped in. The Nasdaq was able to fight off the negative news from Network Appliance (see below) and picked up 27 points on the day. The Dow gained 28 on the day. These gains were well off the pre-announcement highs of up 70 for the Nasdaq and up 118 for the Dow. (source: MSNBC) http://msnbc.com/news/158521.asp Dow Jones Industrials: 10707.60 +26.54 +0.25% |

The market had a great day today, as a broad-based rally helped the major indices post significant gains throughout the day. The Nasdaq ended a six-session losing streak as the entire tech sector benefited from bargain-hunting. The tech-heavy index finished up 171.5 points, nearly 5.8%, with big-caps performing particularly well. Led by big-cap techs, the Dow also posted large gains, ending 164 points higher on the day. Jolted by an earnings miss from Hewlett-Packard, both the Dow and the Nasdaq recovered late Monday from triple-digit losses but still finished lower. The Nasdaq dropped 62.27 points, or a little more than 2 percent, to 2,966.72, although the index tumbled as low as 2,859.39, a 169-point drop, before rebounding. The Dow Jones industrial average skidded 85.70 points to end the day at 10,517.25. With a crazy and still undecided presidential election, it was a tough week. The markets, especially the Nasdaq (off 12% this week), certainly did not rise to the challenge. The major indices stumbled into the close today, ending the day at session lows. For the Nasdaq, the loss of 171 points (more than 5%) dropped the index to its lowest levels of the year, just above the 3000-point mark. The major culprit was Dell. The PC maker warned of slower sales in the future and sent the tech sector into a panic. The Dow held up better until the final hours of trading when the blue chips gave way to selling as well. The Dow closed the day off more than 2%, or 231 points. (source: CNNfn) http://cnnfn.cnn.com/2000/11/10/markets/markets_newyork/

U.S. stocks clawed their way out of a deep hole today but still finished lower amid new delays in the outcome of the presidential race and fresh concerns about corporate profit growth. Weakness in Internet stocks sent the Nasdaq lower for the fourth straight day and the Dow fell on worries about earnings strength at Walt Disney and sales gains at IBM. The Nasdaq dropped 31.35 points, or almost 1 percent, to 3,200.35 while the Dow shed 72.81 to 10,834.25. With the majority of investors' attention turned to the presidential election, the market saw little sustained movement today. The Nasdaq opened lower, climbed into the black around 11:30, and hovered around breakeven all day, finished down .4 points. After a day of jumpy trading, the Dow also finished lower, down 25 points. Stocks worth noting: Cisco systems opened lower after its earnings report last night, but pared early losses and posted decent gains on the day. Transmeta's IPO was also a bright spot: the stock priced $3 above its $16 - $18 range and jumped 129% on the day. The Dow Jones industrial average rallied today as investors shifted their focus to the U.S. presidential election and rotated money out of some tech issues into blue chips, seen as providing some safety for investors' money. The Dow jumped 159.26 points to close at 10,977.21. That put the blue chip indicator within 23 points of the key 11,000 level, which it hasn't reached since mid-September. The Nasdaq, however, was little changed, slipping just 35.34 points, or a little more than 1 percent, to 3,416.24. It was a fairly quiet end of the week for the major indices. The Nasdaq capped a solid week with a 22.5 point gain. Qualcomm was a notable winner, picking up more than 12%. The Dow struggled for most of the session but finished well off of session lows. Quaker Oats was one of the big winners, picking up 9% after the company rejected a buyout offer from Pepsi. The Dow dropped 62.5 points on the session. (source: CNNfn) http://cnnfn.cnn.com/2000/11/03/markets/markets_newyork/ Dow Jones Industrials: 10817.95 -62.56 -0.57% |

It was a strong day for the tech sector as the Nasdaq surged to close at session highs. Intel led the broad-based charge with a bullish outlook this morning and the Nasdaq didn't look back. The index closed up 96 points, nearly 3%. The strength in big-cap tech, however, was not enough to boost the Dow. Old economy stocks struggled most of the day and the Dow closed off 19. Just one day after triple-digit gains, U.S. stock markets showed signs of weakness today, led by selling in the financial services sector after a negative analyst view, and in select tech stocks after an earnings and revenue warning from WorldCom. Overall the Dow dropped 71.67 points, or 0.65%, to 10899.47 while the Nasdaq composite slipped 36.24, or 1.08%, to end at 3333.39. The only poor performers at the market today were reporters and columnists with their incessant Halloween puns. The market has a whole realized big gains, as an early rally in tech spread throughout. Internet, chips, and networking issues led the way for the Nasdaq, which started up a meager 32 points but climbed all day to finish at 178 above breakeven (a 5.6% gain). The Dow started flat and jumped around the unchanged point until about 11 AM, at which point it began a climb that led to a 135 point gain on the day. The market traded and closed in mixed fashion today, as the rest of the market benefitted from rotation out of the tech sector. Internet, networking, and biotech stocks pulled the Nasdaq down all day, which hit a low around noon at about 130 under. Strength in semis helped the tech-heavy index recover some lost territory, but the index slid into the close, finishing down 87 points. The Dow advanced steadily throughout the day, as most issues performed well. The blue-chip index finished near session highs, up 245 points.
