Here's an article about the latest on the CDNow/N2K merger. http://www.news.com/News/Item/Textonly/0,25,33719,00.html

CDnow just launched a new strategy to create an additional revenue stream through the sale of advertising. CDnow's new editorial strategy integrates expanded music news, reviews and interviews into the store. Does this mean they're desperate or smart? Amazon (which is obviously smart) hasn't done this so far.

moehrinp, I haven't heard anything about that. Do you know what the fees are for? If not, maybe I'll check out their SEC filings to see what they say.

re their affiliate program (Cosmic Credit) - it's working incredibly well. They had 10,000 members a year ago, and now they have 145,000. That's even faster growth than Amazon's affiliate program.

CDNW has recently been trading between $20 -$24 and may represent a decent buy as I can't think of why the company won't obtain that same trading range. Longer term, has anyone noticed the upcoming Fee's to be paid in Dec of the next three years?

I agree. Add CDNow's million to N2K's 700K and you have a very big ecommerce player.

N2K had a good quarterly report a few days ago, and now CDNow just announced that said it expects 4Q revenue to top $20M, vs. $8M in the year-ago period. CDNow has a million customers now. They might not be able to keep up with Amazon, but I think they're going to be able to build a very successful business.

eagle, yes, CDnow has an affiliate program like Amazon's. They call it Cosmic Credit (don't ask me why). If you visit their home page and then click on 'Cosmic Credit' on the left side you can see all the details. I don't think they're going to be able to replicate the success Amazon is having with its affiliate program, because there's a more natural fit for books than CDs - no matter what a site's subject is, there are books for it, but probably not CDs.

I believe that an interesting approach (one that CDNow may copy?) to CD sales on the web can be seen by Global Media Network- (GLMC).

Global Media plans on 1) promoting downloadable music, 2) allowing companies to partner with their company to offer CD's, etc. for sale on their own sites (Amazon's marketing model), and 3) sell books, videos, concert tickets, etc.

Maybe Global Media has the wrong concept but I really like the fact that they are promoting their products to other websites as a way to gain exposure and sales. I wonder if CDNow has any of these plans in the works?

Time Warner already owns half of Columbia House, a record club that has its own online music-selling business. I don't know if that makes acquisition more or less likely. It could mean that Columbia House has tried selling music online and saw how hard it is and saw CDnow doing it successfully and decided that it would be cheaper to buy than to build.

Time Warner and CDNow both declined comment on a news report that the media giant has considered an investment in the online music retailer. A Time Warner spokesman said while the company intends to increase its electronic commerce business, it would not comment on the report involving CDNow. Ziff Davis Net news site quoted a variety of sources as saying the two companies had talks on a Time Warner investment. According to the report on Dec. 22, some observers believe a Time Warner investment would be a "way to grab" the company's president, Jason Olim, to boost its efforts at expanding its own e-commerce business. Time Warner chairman Gerald Levin has said he believes there is money to be made in electronic commerce, adding that the company could leverage various direct marketing businesses, as well as publishing operations, to sell more products on the internet.

Actually, CDNow recently announced, along with computer-product retailer Cyberian Outpost, Hollywood Video's Reel.com, and eToys, the creation of the Online Shopping Network. "The network members will each refer their customers to a hub page that will feature special promotions on a variety of goods and services from the participating retailers, and will interconnect the network's merchants. Alliance partners will refer consumers to other partners through links on order confirmation pages and promotions in customer newsletters. In addition to better servicing the customer, the new e-commerce model supports the group's specialty market strategies and may lower overall customer acquisition costs." All these sites are best-of-breed, so this should be a big deal.

I think it would be a massive undertaking for CDNow to sell books. They might be better off partnering or combining with Barnes & Noble than trying to do it on their own.

If they are, they’re probably going to have to change their name. Jeff Bezos was planning to sell lots of different stuff from the start, that’s why he chose the name Amazon rather than (e.g.) BooksNow.

When the N2K merger was announced, they were asked about this, and they said they had no such plans right now, but it’s obviously something they might consider in the future.

Do you think CDNow will get into selling books and other products the way Amazon is doing?
