Compaq Computer and IBM have put aside their own rivalry to join forces against mutual foe EMC in the high-end storage market. IBM and Compaq will resell some of each other's hardware and software and will work to make sure all of the products work together, the companies said today. Machiavelli, more analysts came to the defense of Compaq today (and btw, it was Salomon who made the downgrade yesterday):

"On Friday, a number of brokerages, including Merrill Lynch, SG Cowen and Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, came to Compaq’s defense, saying that the company’s channel inventories remain in good shape."

Here's why I can't stand analysts. Yesterday, one of them (I apologize, but I don't remember who) lowered their price target on Compaq from 45 to 25 (it was trading at 28, so a real stretch for this guy!) because he said Compaq had too much inventory. Compaq promptly closed at 25. Go analyst! Oh wait...

But finally, a company took a stand. After the bell, the Compaq chief said that the problem is not too many inventories, but not enough! In fact, they are having trouble filling orders (in a positive way), and this analyst doesn't know a thing about their company.

Too many companies are letting irresponsible analysts go to far in trying to get their name in the news or get on CNBC. It's time more companies responded to these downgrades/reasonings in order to protect their shareholders.

In an unprecedented show of solidarity, Hewlett-Packard (HWP), Compaq Computer (CPQ), Gateway (GTW) 2000, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) , NEC and seven other high-tech powerhouses put aside their differences to announce the creation of a new independent company to serve as an internet exchange for the computing and electronics industry. from the current Upside:
"Yes, it's easy to second-guess, but Eckhard Pfeiffer drove this company almost all the way into the ground with ill-advised and poorly executed acquisitions -- particularly of Digital Equipment. Restructuring, management turnover and reorganization have drawn focus away from innovation and growth. However, Michael Capellas was a brave choice for the new CEO, and he is itching for an opportunity to prove the doubters wrong. Compaq's powerful brand -- although somewhat tarnished -- still shines, and there is a window of opportunity to rebuild."

Spreadsheet Analysis on Compaq Computer

I put together a valuation spreadsheet on Compaq Computer using data from Value Line.

Some interesting observations include:
1. Revenue and cash flow growth remain flat but if they are successful in cutting expenses and setting more direct distribution channels they may meet earnings projections which will show a substantial growth improvement to 100%+
2. Long term debt is nil and current financial position is decent.
3. Inventory and receivable management are O.K. at 20 days and 62 days outstanding respectively, but they have a long way to go to match Dell.
4. At 16.7%, return on equity is O.K. but again doesn't come close to Dell.
5. Most recent price appears to take recent troubles into account. It is less than most of the intrinsic value estimates. In fact, it is far less than what the average dividend yield would support.
6. If Compaq can get its act together and achieve 25% annual earnings growth over the next five years, the projected Win/Lose ratio is very attractive at 11.59 to 1.

Any comments in response?

Rather than entering 2000 as a $50 billion company that could rival IBM or Hewlett-Packard in the breadth of its technology and capability, Compaq is fighting for survival. http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1003-200-1507784.html

12/31/99 BULLISH ON COMPAQ
Even as margins decline in the pc market
demand continues fueled by portables , cds,
Revenue from the Alpha and Himayla servers dominate large scale platforms such as AOl
Amazon.com and CBSmarketwatch. The growth of CMGI dwarfs Alta vista and gives Compaq a window into emerging technology. Cappelas has character , knowledge , and a vision for compaq.
