There is a marketletter writer, in Vermont I think, who writes a letter called the High Tech Strategist. Two months ago, in a well documented letter, he showed how the PC manufacturers were loading the pipeline in oreder to report sales figures in line with estimates. He sais all these Pc mfg. stocks would get hit hard when the truth came out. Compaq's receivables went up dramatically and proved his point. Based on his letter, i exited my CPQ position at 43. Until the glut of product works its way through the marketplace, I don't think CPQ is going to recover for a while. |

Hey, does anyone here know why Compaq is dropping so fast? I haven't seen this current price in over 6 months. |

Analysts at Merrill Lynch, DLJ, and Paine Webber reduced their earnings outlook for the company. Is anybody else afraid that today's reaction will continue? |

They've also made Compaq.com a separate business unit and are pushing hard to replicate Dell's success with the direct sales model. I don't think it's too much of a stretch to treat Compaq as an internet company. |

I think Compaq is serious about transforming itself into an internet company. Others have mentioned Alta Vista and Shopping.com. But they're going further than that. They're offering ecommerce and internet solutions throughout the enterprise. 85% of Presarios are internet-enabled. Compaq understands that broadband is the future, and has already started offering PCs with DSL modems. |

Compaq Computer (CPQ) announced Tuesday it will buy Zip2 Corp., which develops, hosts and maintains consumer Web sites specifically for media companies. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed. Compaq said Zip2 will become part of its Alta Vista subsidiary. Separately, Compaq said it has completed a $1.6 billion tender offer for shares e-tailer Shopping.com. Its 200 clients include sites in the top 50 U.S. metropolitan areas. Compaq says the acquisition of Shopping.com and Zip2 will allow "AltaVista to deliver the most robust platform for localized information and e-commerce on the Internet." |

Compaq gained market share in the latest quarter (from 14.6% to 15.4%), while Dell lost market share (from 9.1% to 8.4%). Dell hasn't won the war yet. |

Three things about Alta Vista-- 1) I read that they are going to be a public company within a year. 2) They are the #12 most visited website in December. 3) They are now the exclusive search engine for Microsoft. |

Yes, I think they are but haven't given details as to when. This one will be big with a capital B. It's probably worth about a billion, which means in the current environment it would probably go public at about triple that. |
