Compaq Computer Monday reported its first quarter profit declined, as the world's No. 2 personal computer maker contended with a slowdown in PC sales and aggressive pricing by its rivals. Dell surpassed Compaq in the first quarter to become the world's largest PC maker, the first time the rankings have shifted in about seven years. Along with becoming the largest PC maker, Dell re-established itself as the fastest growing--with a vengeance. Dell saw shipments of desktops, notebooks and Intel-based servers grow by 34.3 percent worldwide and 30.7 percent in the U.S. Nearly everyone else shrank. Computer maker Compaq managed to best lowered earnings estimates this afternoon. The company reported earnings of $0.30, topping FirstCall estimates by two cents. If the people who signed up for MSN satellite service know how to read then they should know that they have to purchase a new
computer, it says that all over the place.
