On my way to work this morning, I saw the CVS 'Good Samaritan' truck helping a broken down roadster. As wonderful as this service is, I can't help but think two things: A. This service seems to have nothing to do with their core business and B. This service must cost alot to maintain in terms of trucks, supplies, training, and drivers (and to work, it needs to be able to blanket all of CVS' markets). Wouldn't this service unnecessarily increase overall costs, and therefore, decrease shareholder value? Any thoughts would be helpful. |

CVS announced plans to acquire internet drugstore Soma.com for about $30 million in stock. Soma.com launched on the internet in January. CVS said a buy-rather-than-build strategy will allow it to expand its own online presence (http://www.cvs.com) immediately, acquire net-savvy management and jump-start the establishment of key online alliances. This will give them a valuable head start and significant first-to-market advantages as the only major drugstore chain with a complete online pharmacy and front-store offering. Soma.com stocks prescription products and 3,000 other items. CVS said it will expand that inventory and add private-label products and photo-finishing services. |
