For the first nine months of 1999, Cobalt posted a loss of $13.7 million on sales of $13.8 million. Not very impressive. |

This summarizes the company pretty well (it's from the Red Herring link above): Cobalt manufactures, configures, and sells complete computer systems preinstalled with one of the Linux distributions. These server appliances deliver single Internet-related applications, such as file serving, Web hosting, email, or electronic commerce. Cobalt, in fact, utilizes a version of Red Hat for its Linux software, for which it pays a license fee. Cobalt customizes the Red Hat version by eliminating large portions of general-purpose source code it deems unnecessary for a dedicated server appliance, thereby tailoring the remaining source code to work effectively with its dedicated hardware. |

5 million shares were offered and 11 million shares were traded the first day, which tells you that there's a lot of flipping going on, and probably not too many buy-and-hold investors getting in on this one. If this is purely an issue of demand exceeding supply, that imbalance will be corrected soon - LinuxOne and Andover.net have both filed for IPOs and VA Linux Systems probably will soon too. If those stocks do well too, the next wave will follow (Caldera Systems, Mandrakesoft, and Turbolinux, and Linuxcare). |

I'm guessing the moonshot IPO was because COBT has the word 'Networks' in its name and is in the Linux market, two bandwagons investors are scrambling to get on board. But does anyone out there done more research on this company? Is the price justified? |
