$7 billion in revenues and 19 cents EPS sounds about right to me.

Dell announced that a recent spike in prices for computer memory chip components due to last month's earthquake in Taiwan is likely to hurt this quarter's results. http://www.zdnet.com/pcweek/stories/news/0%2C4153%2C2375752%2C00.html

Well it seems pretty obvious now that the PC industry is getting his on both sodes of the microeconomic principles: Y2K is decreasing the demand, and the Taiwan quake has now officially decreased the supply. Yesterday, Dell, for the first time in six years said they will miss an earnings estimate, largely to do the impact the quake had on operations. The consensus was 20 cents, though now it will probably be 18 cents. Since the quake affected the supply of components, component suppliers have been able to call the price shots. PC companies typically carry four to six weeks of inventory while Dell and fellow direct seller Gateway carry about a week's worth of components. Once Taiwan production levels hit pre-earthquake levels, Dell and Gateway will benefit from the lower prices, causing optimism for the 4th quarter. Dell is slated to report third-quarter results Nov. 11.

I agree with gatsby, the Dell/IBM deal is big. Here's another tidbit I found that I thought was interesting:
Dell's decision to offer customers a cable modem or a DSL modem with their PC purchase--and to help them make the choice by telling them which high-speed internet service is available where they live--will help deliver broadband to the masses right out of the box. As the fat-pipe market explodes, Dell will be the go-to guy.

Dell has announced a key services contract with IBM that could be worth up to $6 billion over the next seven years, according to the companies' officials. An extension of a $16 billion technology pact reached in March, the deal says that IBM's Global Services division will be able early next year to offer a range of installation and warranty services to Dell's U.S. corporate, government, and education customers early next year and will expand internationally shortly after that.

PROs:
IBM: access to Dell's clients
Dell: It basically gives Dell a workforce of 50,000 (up from 30,000) field technicians it can deploy worldwide to help its customers integrate the latest Dell technology.

This is a great move for Dell and their customer service, as their high-end products often can require heavy-duty integration and upkeep services. Also, it shows Dell is attempting to move more towards end-to-end solutions rather than stay happy with stand alone products.

This seems like good news from Dell for Dell owners - Dell has promised everyone a free Windows 2000 upgrade if they have Windows NT installed through February 2000. Here's the press release:

Check out the Dell conference call if you can. What struck me was the business, growth, and success they have been having on the international side, as well as the fact that they see the free-pc model as kind of an afterthought - not a real focus. Whoever thought the death of the pc is eminent will change their mind after this call, at least regarding worthwhile PCs.
